The issues of losing to luck

Post by Nyataria on Fri Aug 28, 2015 1:00 pm

Henceforth I will refer to luck as RNG, I think its a better term. RNG=random number generator, generally when people use the word luck in reference to yugioh they are talking about the low chance of a specific draw, and that is the only definition I care about for the purposes of this thread. RNG describes that exactly, and does not extend into any other definitions for luck.

When someone lose a game to your opponent having a specific card combination that beats them, when no(or few) other combinations would do so, the loss is very very often blamed on RNG. The problem with blaming a loss on RNG is that it gives you an excuse to ignore everything else that happened and boil the game down to, "They topdecked blank card and won."

The essence of this problem comes from such a large portion of improving as a player being in analyzing the decisions you made in a game. With such a low chance that you played perfectly(or even are aware of the reasons your play was entirely correct decisions) After losing a game to what feels like RNG its much more difficult to do that kind of analysis, but still very important to do so. That kind of analysis isn't "what could I have done to win," its "what were the optimal decisions and why."

Ultimately you just cannot learn anything when your mindset comes from, "well he got lucky." If your goal has improvement in mind, blaming a loss to luck or rng will get you nowhere. All it does is let you feel like its not your fault you lost, and your pride just isn't worth preserving over improvement.

No it was not related to you actually. Though you are an example of it.
